Previously we talked about Managing Diabetes today we will talk about...
Ways and Importance of measuring Blood Sugar level.
There are many risk factors associated with diabetes and genetic is one of them. But just because someone in the family has diabetes it does not mean that you too will have it. A lot depends on how you live.
Diabetes link to family is dependent more on eating habits of the family. If someone has diabetes in your family like parents, siblings or grandparents then you may stand a higher chance of developing one. Either ways you should stick to a diet and regime that is healthy as it may greatly cut on the chances of the genes expressing themselves

People who are over 40 years old and have a parent or sibling affected with Diabetes should consider themselves for regular screening. You may be in a zone called Prediabetes which simply means that the sugar levels in blood are higher than normal and there is now even a higher chance of you slipping into Diabetes.
Type diabetes typically has an acute onset and therefore does not give a time for monitoring. Some people who already are suffering from Type 2 diabetes may see themselves convert to Type 1 and monitoring would come handy in these cases.
Following are the ways of measuring Diabetes...
Urine Testing: It is the simplest possible but not very accurate test for diabetes. It is not very accurate because urine sugar will be positive only when the blood glucose level exceeds the kidney threshold.
Blood Testing: Blood tests is more accurate than urine testing. Two different methods are used to develop handy instruments for measuring blood sugar. First is Photometric meters, It uses colour reflectance measures to detect the colour change on a strip pad caused by glucose in the blood. Second is Electrochemical detection, It is an alternative method in that glucose in the blood causes a reaction on the test strip producing a tiny current. The meter detects the current and gives a digital test result.
C-peptide Measure: C-peptide is a substance that the pancreas releases into the bloodstream in equal amounts to insulin. However, it is not absorbed by the body like insulin and is washed out with urine. C-peptide levels show exactly how much insulin the body is making. Currently, tests based on the competition principle and the micro titer plate separation are available in kit form. However, the test can be done only in a well furnished lab.
Glycohemoglobin Measure: The procedure (HPLC method) has been difficult until hand held meters and cost effective reagents have appeared in the market recently. Monoclonal antibody method is used in these machines to quantitatively determine the glycohemoglobin contained in a drop of blood.
