What is Diabetes?
Diabetes or medically Diabetes Mellitus is simply persistent elevated amounts of sugar in blood. The amount of sugar in blood is controlled by Insulin, to be precise it transports glucose from blood to inside the cells for them to do their work like muscle contraction, hormone production, reproduction, enzyme secretion etc. Therefore any defect in the life of Insulin production or usage will affect the amount of sugar the blood carries. It may be that the pancreasnot producing enough insulin or the cells of the body not responding properly to the insulin produced.
Following are the important measures for Diabetes…
• An HbA1c level of 6% or higher; or
• A fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level of 110 mg/dLor higher; fasting is defined as no caloric intake for at least 8 hours, or
• A 2-hour plasma glucose level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher during a 75g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), or
• A random plasma glucose of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher in a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia (ie, polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss) or hyperglycemic crisis
