Holiday survival for Diabetes:

Well its easy…well it’s not, completely depends how deeply linked your delight is with food, and even if there are deep connections, there are a few smart ways to cheat smartly. Let us have a look at what can be done depending on the type of Diabetes you have.

Type 1 (Insulin Dependent): There should be no change in the dosage unless allowed by the physician. It is common for meal time to change while you are traveling or celebrating at home therefore sit with your physician and plan on how you can manage with smaller meals. This may mean altering dosage, choosing protein rich diet to fill up till you sit for a complete meal. Say for example its holiday season and you have guests coming over for dinner, you have a multi course meal for your guests which is a mix of veggies, salads, soups, meats and desserts. Start with a portion of salads and soups and leave it at that. When it’s time for dinner or lunch you may not avoid items on the menu rather have it all in smaller portions. Spread out the meal to last longer. This not only pushes the sugar levels up slowly but also keeps them at a healthy level. If you are drinking alcohol, eat something before that. Restrict yourself to 1-2 drinks without sugary additives. Holidays season also expects you to travel, shop, do a lot of house work and may be visit people around. Staying active will help compensate for the extra of everything. Remember food is only a part of the holiday season.
Type 2 (Non-Insulin dependent): People with this condition tend to binge more than the former ones. The principles behind the management will anyways remain the same. Remember to not stay hungry and not suddenly eat a lot, try a lot of vegetables and soups. More than the regular meal, desserts tend to punch very high amounts of carbs, so keep the portion small and if possible skip other carbohydrate rich parts of the meal to adjust the dessert. If you are out in a restaurant and ordering off the menu, you may as well ask if there are sugar-free options available. Stay active, play, talk and keep the fun going and this will keep yourself distracted.
Keep monitoring levels, do not stress out if they are above the normal, adjust it in the next meal and get active a little more.
